Miami Art Basel, one of South Florida's most important events kicks off this week, with organizers expecting record attendance following the resumption of post-pandemic travel.
The three-day event began December 1 at the Miami Beach Convention Center and remains the most anticipated part of Miami Art Week, which offers numerous lectures and performances throughout Miami-Dade County.
Business leaders look forward to Art Basel all year for its economic impact on the region, fueled by tourists and art lovers who come to South Florida from all over the world. Hotels and restaurants are the primary beneficiaries of this influx and often reach capacity between November 29 and December 4.
"Businesses have been incredibly receptive this year. We've seen many hotels in Miami and Miami Beach extremely involved in Art Week," said John Copeland, Director of Cultural Tourism for the Greater Miami Convention Center and Visitors Bureau. "We are seeing restaurants expanding their menus, pop-up stores opening, as well as art fairs and galleries.
According to the GMCVB (Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau) the average price for a hotel night will be $669 this week, up 44.6% from the same week in 2019. Miami Art Week and Art Basel alone contributed $79 million in gross revenue to the region's hotels (as a reminder, Art Basel has been cancelled in 2020 due to COVID).
Last year, Miami International Airport recorded more than one million passengers on the week, an increase of 9.8% compared to the same event in 2019.
Art Basel brought up to 80,000 attendees to the Convention Center last year, with 118,000 hotel rooms booked.
This year and in a historical context of the region's attractiveness to startup founders and developers, manyArt Basel and Art Week events will feature a technological aspect, as more and more tourists are interested in the themes of blockchain in particular NFT applied to art.
