Last Tuesday, Okcoina digital currency trading platform headquartered in San Francisco, announced the opening of an office in Brickell as a hub for its Miami area employees. Okcoin plans to expand its local footprint and serve its growing customer base in Latin America from this new strategic location.
It is the latest company in the sector, to set up an office in Miami after Mayor Francis Suarez, an avid supporter of digital currencies, launched a campaign to recruit companies and create financial technology jobs in the city.
"Our new location in Miami is a strategic expansion that allows us to respond to the rapid increase in crypto-currency adoption in Latin America while complementing Mayor Suarez's commitment to making the city a hub for technology development," said Hong Fang, CEO ofOkcoin.
Okcoin plans to add more local employees and launch an internship program for the Miami area in an effort to support the city's booming tech sector. The company has signed on as the first-ever crypto-currency sponsor of ShellHack, a hackathon that brings together more than 1,000 software programmers each year. This year's ShellHack will take place at Florida International University from September 24-26.
"We are excited aboutOkcoin 's commitment to local talent and the innovation ecosystem," Mayor Suarez said in a statement. "The company's active presence will help us open more financial and professional doors for our residents."
Okcoin is the first crypto-currency exchange to list MiamiCoin, the city's digital currency. Miami recently partnered with CityCoin, a crypto company that launches digital assets that support municipalities, to launch the virtual currency in early August. The goal is to use the funds generated by MiamiCoin to support city services and initiatives (see previous article).
Founded in 2013, Okcoin creates tools with the goal of helping consumers invest and trade their Bitcoins and 25 other digital assets. The company says it has several million customers in 190 countries and international offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malta, Japan and Korea.
